History of Building Kellie's Castle

The castle was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. Born in 1870 in Scotland, Smith arrived in Malaya (now Malaysia) in 1890 and started working with an estate owner. He eventually succeeded in his ventures and owned a 960-acre estate that he named Kinta Kellas, after his home farm in Scotland.

Who is building Kellie's Castle?

Smith decided to build the castle after the birth of his first son in 1915, intending it to be a home for his son and a symbol of his love for his wife, Agnes. He designed it based on the sophisticated architectural styles of the time, with plans for a 6-storey tower, indoor tennis courts, a rooftop courtyard for entertaining, and even Malaysia's first elevator.

However, the construction of the castle was never completed. Tragically, Smith passed away due to pneumonia during a short trip to Portugal in 1926. After his death, his wife and children moved back to Scotland and sold the estate. The castle was left abandoned and unfinished.
